NABA’s Member of the month in September is Nortura. On July 2nd the Norwegian leading supplier of meat and eggs celebrated the founding stone ceremony of a modern abattoir at Luwero in Uganda together with its sister producer organization and their industrial partner. H.E President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni laid the foundation stone and H.E Norwegian Ambassador to Uganda Susan Eckey gave a speech on behalf of Norway and Nortura. Cabinet Minister of Trade Industry and Cooperatives Ms. Amelia Kyambadde also attended the ceremony together with about 2 500 people.

Nortura has for 10 years been involved in development projects in East Africa, mainly in Uganda. Together with Norad, Ugandan farmers and authorities, Nortura has implemented programs to develop the meat sector in the country. The aim is to enable Ugandan farmers to increase their income through better production methods, healthier animals and a modern meat industry that can supply the market in both Uganda and neighboring countries. By organizing the meat producers, their opportunities for balancing the power in the value chain is improving, so that farmers one day can get their fair share of the value added.

In a previous Nortura / Norad-project the UMPCU (Uganda Meat Producers Cooperative Union) was established, and they are now positioned as key players in developing the Ugandan livestock sector. UMPCU will be in charge of a newly erected Livestock Resource Center, and they will also take ownership in the new abattoir. The LRC-center will act as a collecting space for animals, where some animals will be fed whilst others will be submitted directly to the slaughterhouse. In addition, the center will be the organization’s hub in consulting and membership services.
