Uganda Meat Producers Cooperative Union Ltd, UMPCU was established in 2008 under guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (MTIC) together with Nortura SA and NORAD to, inter alia, spearhead improvement of livestock production and productivity, commercialize the sub-sector and lead value addition along the value chain “from the farm to the fork.”
Today, the Union is owned by 33 grassroots primary Cooperative Societies located in the “cattle corridor” and one in Northern Uganda. It brings together approximately 2617 beef farmers.
UMPCU also has a secretariat with permanent staff at its headquarters and at the three “Livestock Resource Centres” (LRCs) in the districts of Luwero, Mbarara, and Masaka. Mbarara LRC has acquired 5 acres of land (worth USD 11,000) at Kyarunjugu – Biharwe sub-county, Mbarara district for establishment of LRC infrastructure. UMPCU intends to buy 5 acres (worth USD 10,000) of the 38.2 acres of abattoir land in Butalangu – Nakaseke district for the establishment of Luwero LRC infrastructure.
The Union is registered under the cooperative Act 1991 with registration number 8802/RCS with a vision: “to be the leading producer of high-quality meat and meat products for local and international markets.”
Our focus for 2017 – 2022 is: To provide a framework for progressive enhancement of Beef meat production, productivity and quality assurance in the targeted areas, giving priority to locally-developed practices including smallholder agriculture and attention to rural livelihoods and formation of producer groups for the development of a market-oriented and environmentally sustainable beef industry in Uganda
