Partners’ Engagement and Investors’ meeting

Lobby and Advocacy

Uganda Meat Producers Cooperative Union (UMPCU) and Uganda Farmers Meat Company (UFMC) have committed to introducing trade agents; both individual and cooperatives in sourcing slaughter animals from UMPCU farmers.

This was concluded at a recent Partners Engagement and Investors’ meeting at Nortura offices in Oslo, Norway.

UMPCU has been working to establish an export standard abattoir business in Uganda since 2010 and as such, it registered a business company; UFMC to spearhead the process. UMPCU/UFMC are currently implementing a joint project “Sustainable Livestock Business development project” with Norges Vel and Nortura, funded by Norad since 2016. Under the project; due to end in December 2019, the land was acquired, an animal holding ground constructed in Nakaseke district and slaughter line equipment was donated by Nortura.

UMPCU through UFMC is now seeking business investors/partners to aid in establishing this abattoir as a profitable business. The Union will also work towards expanding its member participation in the business and assure that there is a sustainable supply of animals to the abattoir when completed.

The meeting held recently was attended by the Chairman UMPCU; Mr. Herbert Kamugisha, the Chairman UFMC; Mr. Moses Walusimbi, the CEO of UFMC; Dr. Francis Jumba and the CEO of UMPCU; Dr. Joshua Waiswa. The team visited organizations; Norges Vel, Nortura and Innovation Norway.
